IBM is close to finalizing a deal worth $5 billion to acquire a software provider.

The purchase of Apptio, which is owned by private-equity firm Vista Equity Partners, could be finalized over the weekend. IBM is in the midst of a makeover, transforming itself into a company focused on the hybrid-cloud and artificial-intelligence businesses. The acquisition of Apptio would add to IBM's portfolio of automation tools and help the company compete with rivals such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Apptio's software helps companies manage their technology spending and make better business decisions based on that data.
