Europe Rejects Trump’s Remarks on Greenland and Affirms Danish Sovereignty

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, in response to remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, that the United States has no right to annex any of the three territories belonging to the Kingdom of Denmark. She urged Trump to stop threatening to take control of Greenland.

Britain’s Response to Trump’s Remarks on Denmark and Greenland

In turn, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed that Denmark and Greenland alone have the right to determine the island’s future. His comments came in response to statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, in which he said the United States needs Greenland — a semi-autonomous Danish territory — to meet America’s national security needs.

Speaking in remarks reported by the BBC on Monday, Starmer said that Denmark is a close European ally and a key member of NATO, stressing that Greenland’s future must be decided solely by Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.

Europe Responds to Trump’s Comments on Denmark and Greenland

European leaders, particularly from the Nordic and Baltic regions, expressed their full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland on Monday, emphasizing that any decisions regarding Greenland are a sovereign matter for Greenland and Denmark alone.

Finnish President: No One Decides on Behalf of Greenland and Denmark

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in a post on X that no one can decide on behalf of Greenland and Denmark except Greenland and Denmark themselves, stressing that Finland offers its full support to its Nordic friend, Denmark.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre echoed the same position, while Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson confirmed that Denmark and Greenland alone have the right to make decisions concerning their future. He added that Sweden “stands firmly alongside its neighboring country,” according to a report published today by Denmark’s Copenhagen Post.

Baltic States Join the Pro-Denmark and Greenland Stance

The Baltic states later joined this supportive position. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said that Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark, affirming that Estonia stands in full solidarity with its ally in the Nordic and Baltic region.

Lithuania Emphasizes Respect for Denmark and Greenland’s Territorial Integrity

Meanwhile, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stressed that respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty forms the foundation of global stability, noting that any decisions related to Greenland or Denmark must remain exclusively in the hands of the two parties.

In the same context, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that legitimate U.S. security concerns should be addressed through direct dialogue with Denmark, rather than through any unilateral actions.

This European show of support comes amid rising political tensions surrounding the Arctic region, which has drawn increasing international attention — particularly due to beliefs that Greenland holds untapped mineral wealth, including critical minerals and rare earth elements essential for modern technologies.
